The Ides of March
The Ides of March This entry brings to a close one of the longest periods of blog inactivity ever since I began this blog. Whats been keeping me so busy? Domestic selection (final stages). Its been a long season of Regular Action, but we are finally beginning to see the Class of 2010 truly take shape. I cant help but be excited. International selection. Choosing slightly more than 100 students out of more than 2500 super-qualified applicants is a daunting task. Im excited about the choices weve made, while at the same time hopeful that the students we couldnt find room for at MIT will have other great opportunities elsewhere. RSI selection. I am honored to be a part of the selection committee for the Research Science Institute, a summer program hosted by MIT and run by the Center for Excellence Education. RSI, which is free (except for the application fee), actually has a lower admission rate than the MIT freshman class. I dont know when decisions will be released, but for those students who are not admitted, I hope youll still apply to MIT, since we have 1400 more admission spaces than RSI does. MITES selection (preliminary phases). I am also honored to participate in the selection committee for the Minority Introduction to Engineering Science (free) summer program at MIT. And again, I dont know when decisions will be released, but for those students who are not admitted, I hope youll still apply to MIT, as many students turned down for MITES are still very competitive for freshman admission. Campus Preview Weekend preparation. CPW is just three weeks away! Were planning a 4-day weekend for the Class of 2010 that will hopefully help admitted students determine whether or not MIT is the right fit. For those of you who are admitted this weekend, I hope youll sign up ASAP for CPW, which is April 6-9. Intel Science Talent Search. Each year I am fortunate to attend the banquet and celebration of the Intel Science Talent Search (STS), which is also referred to as the junior Nobel Prize. Previous STS winners include Prof. Eric Lander (my MIT freshman biology teacher, and this years CPW keynote speaker). One of the reasons I really like Intel STS is because it is a great celebration of science research and education, and we need more celebrations of excellence in these fields. And in this season of high anxiety over selective college admissions, I think its worth noting that this years STS winner, Shannon Babb, will attend Utah State University, and that last years winner, David Bauer, attends the City University of New York Honors College. The Ides of March On the ides of March, I attended the awards ceremony of the Intel Science Talent Search (STS). As you may have read, this years big winner was David Bauer from New York City, who did a project on quantum dots. David is off to the CUNY Honors College next year. The STS awards ceremony is a black tie event; I was sporting my tux. Its a pretty swank event. With all the glitz, the people dressed to the nines, the great food, it made me feel like I was at the Oscars of high school science. And, in a way, I was. Science isnt celebrated enough in our society, and I think a big part of that is its not really in the nature of the science community to self-promote or to create idols, anoint heroes. This really struck me on the day after Einsteins birthday, two weeks after an article in the Science Times wondering who is the next Einstein. Could it happen again? Who or where is the next Einstein? No question is more likely to infuriate or simply leave a scientist nonplussed. And nothing, of course, would be more distracting, daunting and ultimately demoralizing than for some young researcher to be tagged the new Einstein, so dont expect to hear any names here. Its probably always a stupid question, said Dr. Lawrence Krauss, a cosmologist at Case Western Reserve University, who nevertheless said he had yet to read a profile of a young scientist that does not include, at some level, some comparison to Einstein. Dr. Stephen Hawking, the British cosmologist and best-selling author, who is often so mentioned, has said that such comparisons have less to do with his own achievements than the medias need for heroes. But maybe its more than the medias need for heroes. Perhaps it is the next generation of scientists and engineers who need role models, who need to see science as something to be celebrated. (Still, some newspapers today called the 40 Intel STS finalists top teen eggheads.) How can we inspire future scientists to follow their calling? So, even with all its excess, I think that a black-tie gala culminating in the naming of the so-called junior Nobel Prize is a great thing, as it is a great celebration of discovery and invention. And despite the Times criticism of high school research programs last week, I still think that anything that gets more students excited about doing real science is a good thing. And possibly the Science Talent Search has done that better than any other program. At the reception, I stood as a representative of the first university to get undergraduates significantly involved in research, chatting with the people behind the Research Science Institute and Californias COSMOS. Each year, more and more students are becoming involved with research at the high school and university level, thanks in part to programs like STS (started in 1942), UROP (1969), RSI (1984) and COSMOS (2000), and new programs spring up each year. I thought to myself, were making progress.

Persuasive Essay About Long Summer Vacations - 729 Words
Itââ¬â¢s summer vacation and students are excited to have a long break with their friends. However, this is the time of the year where they forget everything they learned all school year because they sleep and wake up late and in between they do not keep their brains active. Instead of reading a book three times a week or practicing math, some work with their parents or on their own, while others stay home being lazy. The long summer vacations for students in Anaheim are ineffective. In order to increase students success in Anaheim Schools, students must have less longer vacations and instead have a round school year to keep their brains active by remembering the analytical subjects as well as others. *In the collections book Maritas Bargain,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Leaving behind a set mindset will increase student success. *In the article Secret to Raising Smart Kids, the author Dweck researches the different views students have on Intelligence. Some believe they were engen dered smart and if they make a mistake they are considered unintelligent, ââ¬Å"A belief in fixed intelligence also make people less willing to admit to their errors or to confront and remedy their deficiencies in school, work and social relationshipsâ⬠(24). This is the biggest mistake a parent or a mentor can instil in a student because it will affect them in the future. If the student believes he/she is smart, they only focus on getting good grades, but when they encounter a challenge they back away because they do not know how to confront it. Since they have never been exposed to difficulty, students become vulnerable and are afraid they will fail, so they do not give it a chance nor do they put in effort. Moreover, itââ¬â¢s crucial that we help them correct this mindset so they learn how to accept challenges and correct their mistakes. This would prevent them from presenting fallacious work at their job, school, or in their social lives.*Moreover, ââ¬Å"Over emphasis in intellects/ talents lead to failureâ⬠(21). How is Wal-Mart expanding so fast and successfully in the global market? Wal-Mart elected to purchase existing grocery store chains instead of entering into a new market without brand identification. The competitive environments in Central and South America shaped the way Wal-Mart expanded. Instead of building new stores, Wal-Mart purchased existing retailers and kept their same name. Wal-Mart does business under Seiyu in Japan, Bodega Aurrera in Mexico, Asda Living in the United Kingdom, Todo Dia in Brazil, and CARCHO in Central America. Around the world, Wal-Mart operates 9 different formats to reach its target markets (Annual Report, 2006, p. 16). Modelling of underwater acoustic communication network Free Essays
string(55) " included in order to avoid collisions from neighbors\." 1. INTRODUCTION The research on underwater acoustic networks (UAN) is gaining attention due to their important applications for military and commercial purposes. Underwater communication applications mostly involve long term monitoring of selected ocean areas. We will write a custom essay sample on Modelling of underwater acoustic communication network or any similar topic only for you Order Now The traditional approach for ocean bottom monitoring is to deploy underwater sensors, record the data and recover the instruments. However this approach creates long delays in receiving the recorded information and if a failure occurs before the recovery, all the data is lost. The ideal solution for these applications is to establish real time communication between underwater instruments and a communication center within a network configuration . Basic underwater networks (UAN) are formed by establishing a two way acoustic link between various instruments such as autonomous underwater vehicles and sensors. the network is then connected to backbone such as internet, through the RF link. This configuration creates an interactive environment where scientists can extract real time data from multiple underwater instruments. The data is transferred to the control station when it is available hence data loss is prevented until a failure occurs[2]. Underwater networks can also be used to increase the operation range of underwater vehicles. The feasible range of underwater vehicles is limited by the acoustic range of a single modem which varies from 10 to 90 km [2].However due to high cost involved in underwater devices it is necessary that the deployed network be highly reliable so as to avoid failure of monitoring mission due to failure of single or multiple devices. From the communication point of view, underwater environment is much different from its terrestrial counterpart. Consequently, the research of UANââ¬â¢s becomes different and exhibits unique features. It is because: The attenuation of acoustic signals increase with frequency and range resulting in extremely small feasible band. The propagation speed of acoustic wave is 1500m/sec which is several orders of magnitude lower than radio waves [3], thus giving large propagation delays. The channel characteristics vary with time and highly depend on transmitter and receiver. The fluctuating nature of the channel causes distortion in the signals. Due to the variable acoustic environment UAN differ in many aspects such as ranging from network topologies to protocols of all layers compared with the ground one. 2. NETWORK TOPOLOGIES The network topology directly influences network capacity of the underwater channel which is severely limited. It becomes important to organize network topology in such a way that no congestion occurs or in other words designing of network topology with single point of failure should be avoided. Underwater networks can be composed of entirely fixed nodes, entirely mobile nodes or a mixture of both. The network topology typically need to be ad hoc in nature either because communicating nodes are moving or basic acoustic conditions change with time. There are three basic network topologies that can be used to interconnect network nodes [3]. (1)Centralized topologyIn this topology, each network host is connected to central station known as hub of the network. The network is connected to a backbone at this central station. Deep under water acoustic networks (UAN) has been tested using this configuration where a surface buoy with both an acoustic and RF modem acts as the hub and controls the communication to and from ocean bottom instruments. This topology is considered the easiest topology to design and implement .The advantage of this topology is the simplicity of adding additional nodes. A major disadvantage of this topology is the presence of single failure point. If the hub fails, the entire network goes down. Further, the network cannot cover large areas due to limited range of single modem. (2)Distributed of point to point topology This topology provides point to point links between every node of the network. There is just one hop from a node to any other node, hence routing is not necessary. The major disadvantage of this configuration is that excessive power is needed for communicating with widely spread nodes. Further, near far problem [4] is much prominent in which a node can block signals of the neighboring node. (3)Multihop topology In this topology nodes are involved to send a message from source node to destination. Hence routing is needed which is handled by intelligent algorithms that can adapt to changing conditions.Multihop networks can cover large areas since the range of the network is now determined by number of nodes rather than the range of the modem. The only problem with this topology is that of packet delay as the number of hops increase 3. MEDIA ACCESS TECHNIQUES Due to scarce bandwidth, long propagation delay and high error rate, underwater nodes in a UAN have to share the available resources. The three basic access techniques are (1) Frequency division multiple access(FDMA)FDMA divides the bandwidth into several subbands and assigns one of them to a particular user. The band is used by this user only till it is released.FDMA may not be efficient in underwater environment. The available bandwidth is extremely limited .By dividing the band into smaller sub bands , the coherence bandwidth of the transmission channel can be larger than FDMA subchannel. This will result in severe fading .another issue is that mechanism could in inefficient in bursty[ 4] traffic because bandwidth is fixed for each subband and cannot be adjusted [5] . (2) Time division multiple access(TDMA) In this multiple access scheme time frame is divided into slots and each slot is assigned one individual user. Each user transmits in the assigned slot. The advantage of TDMA is power saving which is extremely critical in underwater environment. Since each user transmit only in its assigned slot, transmitter could be turned off during the idle period to save energy.TDMA is also flexible in the way that data rate of users can be increased on demand. The same hardware can be used to transmit and no extra hardware is needed e.g. to add another time slot for a user. The disadvantage of TDMA is that it has larger overload than FDMA which means guard times are included in order to avoid collisions from neighbors. You read "Modelling of underwater acoustic communication network" in category "Essay examples" Further, TDMA requires strict time synchronization. The significant difference in propagation delays cause large idle times resulting in decrease in throughput. (3) Code division multiple access CDMA This multiple access method is the widely deployed scheme based on spread spectrum. It allows users to transmit signalsall the time with all available bandwidth. Signals from users are distinguished by means of spreading code. This code is orthogonal to the spreading codes used by other users. There are two spreading techniques namely direct sequence spread spectrum(DS) and frequency hopping spread spectrum(FH).In the former case the spread code is multiplied directly(linear modulation) in order to spread the original bits while in latter case, the carrier frequency of a user is changed according to the pattern of the spread code. Following are the main advantages of CDMA (a)It has higher efficiency and throughput than FDMA and CDMA [3]. (b)CDMA is very effective against jamming, multipath interference and any other interference that appears deterministic [6]. (c)Switching from signal to signal for a transmitter or receiver can be easily done by changing the spread codes. Thus CDMA is flexible. (d)In DS system, fine time resolution of spreading codes provides the possibility of coherently combining multipath arrivals using rake receiver. The rake receiver identifies three strongest multipath signals and combines them to one powerful signal. If the resolvable multipath components fade independently, it is possible to extract a time diversity gain present in the channel [5]. (e)Increased communication security. Due to above mentioned reasons, CDMA and spread spectrum signaling appear to be promising multiple access method for shallow water acoustic networks. 4. MAC PROTOCOLS FOR UNDERWATER NETWORKS A lot of media access control (MAC) protocols for underwater networks have been explored such as ALOHA, slotted ALOHA and CSMA. The most significant protocols among underwater networks seem to be CSMA/CA . Carrier sense media access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) The scarce resources of channel can be utilized much better if users sense the channel before transmitting a packet. This protocol uses two signaling packets called request to send (RTS) and clear to send (CTS). When a device intends to send a packet, it first senses whether another station is already transmitting (carrier sense). If no transmission is sensed, the device will issue RTS signal which contains the length of the message to be sent. If the recipient station senses that the medium is clear, it sends a clear to signal (CTS) which also contains the length of the message to be transmitted. As soon as the station wishing to transmit receives the CTS signal, it sends the actual data packet to its intended recipient. If the transmitting station does not receive the CTS signal in reply, it begins the RTS procedure. The controlling signal CTS should be heard by all the nodes within the range of the receiver node which in turn means that this protocol relies on the symmetry of the channel. It becomes essential to send CTS from a higher level to ensure that all the nodes within the range can hear it. This protocol can be used as a basis of media access protocol for underwater networks. It provides information for power control algorithms as nodes learn the minimum power level needed for reliable communication by trial and error. 5. NETWORK LAYER Single hop transmission becomes inefficient if the range of the network becomes large. In that case multihop transmission is needed to relay the information from source to destination. It has also been proved that in underwater networks multihop transmission is more efficient in terms of power consumption [7]. The network layer is responsible for routing packets from source to destination when multihop is needed. There are two methods of routing namely virtual circuit routing and packet switched routing. In virtual circuit routing, a communication path is decided before the data transmission takes place. Based on resource optimizing algorithm, the system decides which route to follow. For the whole transmission time session between two communicating entities is dedicated and exclusive, and released only when the session terminates. In packet switching, the packets are sent towards the destination irrespective of each other. There is no pre determined path and each packet has to find its own route. Each node is involved in routing the packets in order to determine the next hop of the packet. Underwater networks may have entirely fixed nodes (ocean bottom sensors) or completely mobile nodes (autonomous underwater vehicles). These instrumentstemporarily form a network without the aid on any pre existing infrastructure. These are called ad hoc networks [3].The main problem in ad hoc networks is obtaining most recent individual link state in the network, so as to decide best route for the packets. However, in case communication medium is highly variable such as shallow water acoustic channel, the number of routing updates can be very high. Some of the routing protocols that can be used in underwater acoustic networks are as follows [3]: (1)DSDV (Destination sequenced distance vector) In this routing algorithm every node maintains a routing table of all available destinations, number of hops to reach the destination and the sequence number assigned by the destination node. The sequence number is used to distinguish stale routes from new routes and thus avoids the formation of loops. If a node receives new information, it uses the latest sequence number .If the sequence number is same as the one already in the table, the route with better metric will be used. The nodes periodically transmit their routing tables to their neighbors. If a node detects any route to the destination broken, then its hop number is set to infinity and its sequence number is increased. The disadvantage of DSDV is that its routing tables need to be updated regularly which wastes batter and small bandwidth even when the network is idle. further, if topology of network changes, a new sequence number needs to be added hence DSDV is not suitable for highly dynamic networks. (2)DSR (Dynamic source routing) Instead on relying on the routing table at intermediate node, DSR makes use of source routing. The sender knows the complete hop by hop route to destination with these routes stored in a route cache. The route for each packet is included in its header. The node which receives the packet checks the header for the next hop and forwards packet. Route discovery works by flooding the network with route requests (RREQ) packets. On receiving the RREQ each node rebroadcasts it, unless it is the destination or it has route to the destination in its route cache. This protocol works well in static and low mobility environments. (3)AODV (Ad hoc on demand distance vector This protocol establishes route to the destination only on demand and does not require nodes to maintain routing tables of destinations that are not actively used. Routes are discovered and maintained by route requests (RREQ), route replies (RREP) and route errors (RERR). AODV uses destination sequence numbers on route updates which guarantees loop free path and gives the view of several fresh routes. The advantage of AODV is that it creates no extra traffic for communication along existing links by lowering the number of messages, thus conserving capacity of the network. Also , distance vector routing is simple and does not require much calculation. However time to establish connection and initial establishment of a route is much longer than the other approaches. 6. RELATED WORK The interest in underwater networks and the consequent research has exponentially grown in recent years. Network Simulation and testing of underwater acoustic networks is relatively a new area, however there already exists some effort in this area. The authors of [2] compare the performances of DSDV, DSR and AODV with regards to following parameters (1)Total throughputIt is the average rate of successful message delivery over a communication channel and is expressed as bits per second. Throughput is the very important metric in underwater acoustics because of very limited bandwidth. Fig 1: Total throughput for DSDV, DSR and AODV routing protocols [2] The above figure shows the total throughput plotted against the offered load. It can easily be concluded that AODV has the best performance and maximum throughput, whereas DSR routing protocol is the worst. (1) Total packet delivery ratio It is the ratio between the number of packets sent out by the source and the number of packets correctly received by the corresponding destination. It is calculated by averaging time passed from the time a data packet is generated and when the packet is received by the destination. Fig 2: Total delivered packets for DSDV, DSR and AODV routing protocols [2] The above figure total delivered packets versus the offered load. The plot indicates that the DSR and DSDV have best performance when the offered load is below 0.1 pkt/sec, and AODV protocol is worse when the offered load is 0.1 pkt/sec. however when the offered load increases AODV protocol gives the best performance compared to DSR and DSDV. (1)Average end to end delay It is the delay in the arrival of packet calculated by averaging the time that passes the time a data packet is generated to when it arrives at its final destination. Figure (3) shows the plot of average end to end delay versus the load offered. The minimum end to end delay is achieved by AODV protocol .DSR is the worst routing protocol having an average delay of 115 sec.In general minimum delay is achieved by all routing protocols when the offered load is small. Fig 3: Total average end to end delay for DSR, DSDV and AODV protocols. [2] In the above mentioned system it can be concluded that AODV routing protocolachieves maximum throughput and has best performance compared with DSDV and DSR routing protocols. It also gives minimum end to end delay when compared with other protocols. The best performance was achieved when offered load was decreased resulting in increase in packet delivery rate and decrease in average end to end delay. 7. CONCLUSION FUTURE PROSPECTS The past decades has significantly advanced underwater networking research. Static protocols such as TDMA or CDMA and dynamic protocols like CSMA/CD have been used in distributed and centralized topologies. DSR, AODV and other lightweight protocols have been investigated for underwater use. Efficient multihop and ad hoc packet routing protocols are promising research areas in future. Time is fast approaching for IEEE 802.11 style standardization for underwater network protocols which will lead to interoperable communication devices that can be used in a plug and play fashion similar to terrestrial wireless systems. Opportunity for Lvmh in China free essay sample
LVMH as the largest luxury producer should take this as an initial factor which will be the greatest potential global environment factor in Chinaââ¬â¢s market beyond 2015. This paper will first focus on the economy situation of China. Then analysis the reason of that Chinese economic growth is significantly link to LVMH development in the future. In the last part, some actions will be discussed in order to advise LVMH to get massive market share after economic recession from the new emerging market. Global environment factor in Chinese market Chinas economic always maintain strong growth momentum. This has become the focus of world attention to Chinaââ¬â¢s, especially during the economic crisis. From 2001 to 2007, Chinas economic growth, measured in gross domestic product (GDP) always maintained a high growth rate, and the growth rate climbed year by year, accelerated from 8. 3% to 14. 2%. In the 2008 economic crisis outbreak situation, though growth slowed, but still kept in more than 9% of the high level. We will write a custom essay sample on Opportunity for Lvmh in China or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Contrast with the United States and United Kindoms negative economic growth, Chinas performance is surprised. Graph 1, which shows by The World Bank (2011), illustrate that, in economic size, China is surpassed today only by the United States, in current exchange rate. And China already accounts for approximately 9. 3 percent of world GDP. Geoffrey Murray (1998) defined China as the next superpower. An article named the China Price (2004) said U. S. industries are inflicted by destroyed Chinese competitors, from kitchenware and car tires to electronic circuit boards. The future may be predicted by Chinas GDP growth rate in the past. In 2015, Chinas economic size will likely more than the United States. pic] Graph 1: GDP (current US$) Data from World Bank. Why this factor is important? There are three main elements make the economic growth become the decisive factors of LVMH in China. The first one is citizens do have money to buy goods produced by LVMH. The LVMH products positioning is luxurygoods. Luxury is a type of goods that beyond the range of people existence and development needs. It has distinctive features, such as unique, scarce or exotic. It is beyond the basic needs of consumers. So it is expensive. Customers need a certain economic strength to buy. Because of the growth of economy, Chinas urban residents income maintained a rapid growth. According to data released by Chinas national bureau of statistics: national urban per capita disposable income reached RMB19109 in 2010, increased 82. 1 percent by 2005 (RMB10493). Deducted price factors, a real increase rate is 59. 0 percent. The average annual real growth rate is 9. 7 percent. An article from Wireless News (2011) stated that the number of Chinese high net worth individuals grows rapidly, the number in 2011 is already two times as 2008, growing to 585,000. In China, people can be called high net worth individuals must have more than 10 million Renminbi in individual investable assets, or the equivalent of $15,00,000 of assets. The two aspects data demonstrate that the number of available consumer increased more than twice in recent years. If Chinas economy continues with an expected growth, the number, which can be used by LVMH, will also double after 2015. The second element is people expecting to buy luxury goods. The increasing of the economic strength give consumers more opportunities to travel or accept education in western countries. According to the COTTM 2012 (n. d. ) ââ¬Å"â⬠¦one remarkable change in 2010, with China (US$ 55 billion) moving up into third position, overtaking the United Kingdom (US$ 49 billion). China has shown by far the fastest growth with regard to expenditure on international tourism in the last decade, multiplying expenditure four times since 2000. Ranking as the seventh biggest source market in 2005, it has since overtaken, respectively, Italy, Japan, France and the United Kingdom. â⬠For the abroad students, the data also increased rapidly in recent years. Yang Ning (2011) demonstrated that the number of Chinese students abroad increased around 20 percent per year on average. According to statistics released by the Ministry of Education, from 2009 to 2010 academic year, the number reached 229,300 in total. It is 30 percent higher than the previous year. All these people who have western life experience affect by the western philosophy of life. Especially the abroad students, subtle change the attitude towards life, improve their requirements of the quality of life. They are more likely understand and love the philosophy expressed by luxury, like the ââ¬Å"art of travelâ⬠. They also transfer these cultures to other potential consumers. As a result, the demand of the whole market improved. Compared with soft luxury market in western countries, Chinese rising is a vigorous and potential growth market. According to the classic life cycle theory, western luxury industry has set up a file in the maturity stage. This stage is a relatively long period. In this period, a few manufacturers, which survived in the competition of the industry, monopolize the market, each manufacturer has their own proportion of the market. The chance of changing share proportion in the market may be small, due to close to each other. However, Chinese luxury industry is in the growth stage. In this period, the market demand is beginning to rise. The market need to have a certain marketing and financial strength enterprise (like LVMH) to gradually lead the market. The new industry products can gradually gain the characteristics mass welcome or preference of its own after the right business activities. New industries also will prosper. Predicted by Boston Consulting, China is expected to promote to the first luxury market in the world in 2015. It will be 32 percent share of total global luxury goods market. This is a remarkably chance for LVMH to gain the competition advantage of the market. What should we do? In order to benefit from this opportunity of economic growth movement, LVMH needs a lot of new strategies in China. There are four points may be can used by LVMH. First of all, according to the different depth that familiar by Chinese consumer on different brands of LVMH, bloc choose the right strategies to improve brands awareness. It means China is a fresh country of luxury consumption, the degree of understanding brands is not high. But for the luxury goods which express the status and represent the high quality, brand awareness is a crucial aspect. In LVMH, people are only familiar with few brands, like Louis Vuitton, Parfums Christian Dior, Givenchy and Hennessy. These brands, especially for Louis Vuitton already has certain market share in China. However, for the other dozens of brands, their name may never heard by Chinese customers. This leads to LVMHââ¬â¢s restricted sales. Bloc can try to rely on the awareness of Louis Vuitton, introduce other different brands. These brands are in the same group, but have different styles, for example Loewe, Celine, Berluti and so on. We also can introduce other wine brands with Hennessy, which have the same quality and different taste. For instance, Domaine Chandon of the California flavor, Bodegas Chandon of the Argentina flavor, Domaine Chandon of the Australia flavor and so on. Let different preference customers have more suitable products for their choice. It is using internal cross-brands cooperation to promote the overall effectiveness of the group. In addition, it is necessary to develop the market in tier two cities. Yuval Atsmon, Vinay Dixit, Glenn Leibowitz and Cathy Wu (2011)stated that Chinas purchases of luxury goods mainly concentrated in the higher income people, this part of peoples residences are transferring to tier two cities. At present, Chinas first cities are crowd of population, and the air is unfresh. People living in any corner always feel pressure. The second city, such as Jiangsu, Sichuan, Fujian, Chongqing, there local people happiness index is higher than the economy developed cities. This multitude who has higher income Pay more attention to the quality of life, they plan to move to second cities. Discovering second city market and establishing stores in tier two cities may first occupy this group of customers. Moreover, transfer the information to target population. Chinese travelling to Hong Kong, Macao and overseas is the purpose of shopping for more. The reason is they can enjoy duty-free treatment. Tariff improved these products sales price in China. The price of commodities which bought from outside the mainland, plus travel and accommodation costs, are still cheaper than bought from the mainland. KPMG (2008) survey data showed that the number of the crowd have increased, compared with 2006. It has accounted for about half of the luxury consumption. Actually, this group of people lack of product information and promotion outside the mainland. Aim at this group of people, LVMH propagandizes their new overseas product and promotion. The organization will gain a competitive advantage, result from peopleââ¬â¢s target products and preferences before go out. Finally, strengthen Internet sales, establish the customer database. The Internets biggest advantage lies in the information flow, update speed, and consumers personal information collection. Through the Internet, building customer database is the effective method to improve sales. Especially for its department stores, duty-free airport outlets and specialist shop sales. Customers who has purchased behavior and no buying behavior can be separated. One part is to take members, club and other forms for those target consumers and potential consumers, make sure they keep for a long time loyalty of our products. The other part is take experts online qa, email or dm sheet in the form of enterprises to promote the feature and sold products newly activities and more valuable services. These activities are for people who never had bought these products, but have landed, and browsed the web site. It aim to improve the companys reputation. At the same time, company also can consider building a platform for communication, which conducive to three parties (current consumers, potential consumers and sale). For instance: the product usage exchange area, discussion blog and so on. Result from the three parties communication, the brand awareness can be improved, desire of shopping can be stimulate, and the purpose of increasing sales can be achieved.

Popcorn Hangover Essay Example
Popcorn Hangover Essay Example Popcorn Hangover Paper Popcorn Hangover Paper Popcorn hangover Is defined as the exhaustion you receive from watching too many shows are movies In a single day or time frame. Popcorn hangover results In Irritation of the eyes from watching the TV long periods of time. Todays society has put the problems of the world on to much TV time for the kids and not enough play time outside. I would in most cases agree with this but after reading the assignment really is it a problem. How many kids stay out of trouble just because there in front TV all the time. Today we have a group of children that learn in many different ways; some must see, some must do and some Just need to hear to learn. Todays movies we can all agree can teach us different things, some good some bad. We can learn a lot about different cultures by watching TV and movies. The popcorn hangover helps you balance out TV time and forces you to allow physical time away from the TV. I personally have experienced Popcorn hangover many times. The last time I had this experience was recently I decided to watch a weekend marathon of walking dead. I started on Friday night around pm and finished up Sunday night at pm. All three days my eyes burnt and were blood shot red and felt extremely exhausted. The following Monday I had to take a personal day due to me feeling so sleepy the next morning, the lack of sleep made me feel nauseated and sick . Over the years I have done many marathons and movies and even though I know how I feel with the Popcorn hangover I continue to do it again and again.

Free sample - A Strategic Plan for Launching BMW 3 Series in USA and UK. translation missing
A Strategic Plan for Launching BMW 3 Series in USA and UK. A Strategic Plan for Launching BMW 3 Series in USA and UKIntroduction The term international business management strategy has its own significance in the techno-savvy world of today. It is the process of establishing the empire of business by a series of strategies viz. executing the business concept, pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods, services, organizations, and events to create and maintain relationships that will satisfy individual and organizational objectives. We can analyse the situation by strategically approach to the launch of BMW 3 series vehicles. We know Product Diversification and Customer Care are strategic tools employed by present day business to efficiently integrate suppliers, manufacturers, warehouses, and customers so that merchandise is produced and distributed at the right quantities, to the right locations, and at the right time to cut down costs while satisfying service-level requirements .In the past, Product Diversification and Customer Care gained momentum and received due attention from practitioners and researchers. It has become present day managerial competitive weapon for improving performance in the field. à Background International strategic management also results in more exports to and imports from other countries, often called offshore sales and imports. Offshore sales and purchases by U.S. manuà facturers have increased to 14 percent of total sales and 10 percent of total purà chases. The volume of corporate voice, data, and teleconferencing traffic between countries is growing at an annual rate of 15 to 20 percent- about double the corpoà rate domestic rate- indicating how businesses are increasingly bridging national boundaries. International strategic management is also widespread area today. Banking, law, information services, airlines, education, consulting, and restaurant services-are particularly active globally. Here we can see the automobile giant is going to launch their latest 3 series vehicles in USA and in UK. Born in Germany, BMW was always a passion to the automobile lovers from the beginning itself. Today, we can see the automobile fan is still deployed behind the brand name simply because of its elegant style, beauty and power. Philip Sadler ââ¬â(2003) Aim of the study BMW is the automobile giant having its presence in every part of the world. The product diversification always enables the company the market leader of the sector without any challenges. Here BMW wants to put their business mark in USA and UK by its latest version BMW 3 series as a part of diversification in the business. The plan BMW intends to ensure its monopoly across the whole world by their corporate strategic management. So as a first and prime step they want to organise a good campaign to make the event more noticeable there in the new country. They wish to make it reorganised their marketing presence within a short time period. BMW Based in Germany, the BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke, AG) chain stretches across the globe. Automobile and engine manufacturing company started their chase in 1916. With profit margins so small, they were continually looking for ways to reduce costs and utilize facilities efficiently in the initial period.. Now the automobile giant has its own mark in the global automobile scenario. à Countryà Makeà Cars (2006)à Cars (2008)à Modelsà Germanyà BMWà 905,057à 901,898à Othersà United Kingdomà Minià 187,454à 235,019à All Minisà à Rolls-Royceà 67à 1,417à All Rolls-Royceà Austriaà BMWà 114,306à 82,863à BMW X3à USAà BMWà 105,172à 170,741à BMW X5, X6à South Africaà BMWà 54,782à 47,980à BMW à Totalà à 1,366,838à 1,439,918à à Presence in the UK Unlike all other countries, UK has become the most number of users of the brand. The figure 187,454 stretches out a great deal from all others. It is in fact shows the appreciation and recognition of the brand among the public. But by using the innovative models the company is very effectively sustain the leadership in the sector. BMW in the USA Even if the figures are the average, the brand has ts own influence in USA market. The figure 105172 shows its presence is one among the first five in the automobile industry. In fact BMW is accelerating to come to the driverââ¬â¢s seat within a short span of time. A clear but brief background of the two markets, with a justification of their selection BMW, however, recently decided to focus its competitive positioning on enhancing the consumer's feel satisfaction experience by its latest 3 series.à Their target market is the upscale families and business men, who have the following shopping priorities: 1.à à Luxurious. The facility is in fact a mark of self esteem and proud, with these items well displayed and good access. 2.à Availability. The selection of items is broad, and the customer has several choices for any one item. 3.à à Timely Service. The show room is open at convenient times, and customers do not have to wait in long checkout lines. The Need for Strategic Planning Strategies of oneââ¬â¢s own will not make any firm fast growth oriented. Organisation structure and systems also play significant roles in turning a strategy successful Philip Sadler ââ¬â(2003) . In fact, that is the pivotal part of marketing aspect. For instance, in a rigid, bureaucratic organisation where everything is done based on written orders, strategies sensitive to time will not work. Control systems should also be tuned to implement the strategy. For instance, the success and growth of a restaurant operating in a highly competitive environment depends on the quality of items, lead time and attitude and behaviour towards customers, often more than on price. In such places, ordering and delivering systems have to be closely monitored to ensure competitiveness and resultant growth opportunities, and to have a sustainable growth. Connor, Dick Davidson, Jeffrey(1990). How does BMW influence the potential customers in the market?à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à As in management, these strategies are formulated and implemented by BMW, which want to grow in the entirely different market. Such firms have to maintain sustainable competitive advantage by delivering superior value to the customer. But as a genuine consultant do have my own suggestions. Although it is difficult for any firm to be an ideal growth business, it is worth attempting to reach that ideal. Positioning map à As BMW has its own mark in both UK and in the USA, company need not struggle to formulate innovative strategies, but they have to convince the customers their unique perceived quality and price positioning. As BMW is high end quality oriented product, there are privileged retailers and customers to take it this new 3 series as their own product. Unlike the main streamers, the product 3 series top level quality product has its unique comfort, luxury which provides the customers a kind of self esteem. The international business strategies for the two countries- the USA and the UK The major challenge before the firm is to align the store with the new competitive priorities established for the chain. An area he has identified as a particular concern is the scheduling of consumers. Maintaining a high level of performance requires more stocking personnel to keep the stock orderly on the shelves and the aisles clear and swept. To make a profit in a low-margin business environment, he has to control costs so that prices remain competitive. The trick is to develop a work schedule for the perà sonnel that satisfies competitive requirements, conforms to a reasonable set of work policies, and utilizes the person-net efficiently to minimize labour costs. Charles W. L. Hillà ,( 2010). Unlike all other countries, UK has become the most number of users of the brand. The figure 187,454 stretches out a great deal from all others. It is in fact shows the appreciation and recognition of the brand among the public. As far as the USA is concerned, even if the figures of the existing BMW users are the average, the brand has its own influence in market. The figure 105172 shows its presence is one among the first five in the automobile industry. In fact BMW is accelerating to come to the driverââ¬â¢s seat within a short span of time. By using the innovative models the company is very effectively sustain the leadership in the sector and moreover the new product does not have any major challenge from any other opponents or other similar factors as the strategy can cover them with the present market identity in both these countries. à SWOPT ANALYSIS In BMW, we have seen, and as we would like to see it in its operations more conspicuously over the time. It seems that it has not achieved a great deal. Starting with an excellent strategy, its turnover is a performance tool par excellence. However, it appears that much more can be achieved with the kind of resources which BMW has. The following factors are evident when we analyse the firm with a SWOPT analysis.(Strength, Weakness, Opportunities, Problems and Threats) analysis and as comments are as under: Strengths An excellent team of professionals The very name BMW signifies the impersonality attached to any single individual's name or family. Scope, thus, exists to work for the company rather than to glorify the name of a family.à à A manufacturing base in terms of office space, equipment and machinery. A well nourished existing customer base of the company. Good contacts with business world. Self generated export business and hence firsthand knowledge of the buyers and the markets. A very close and harmonious social relationship among partners is seen. It is an indicative of a similar social status of all the partners. Presence of both domestic and export markets inà à BMW Market mix enables knowledge of both the markets, but it can be turn to a plus by looking back on the commitment they have shown in the past.à Product associated has a tremendous growth potential, both in international and domestic markets. Weakness à Size: BMW has to grow big and utilise fully the entrepreneurial talents available to it. The present size is not optimum and this is leading to under-utilisation of the time of the directors. The whole Woking of it has to be reorganized to utilise the 'human resourcesââ¬â¢ available to it. Product Portfolio: Though so far has been able to generate sales from onlytwo lines, but the lines have very narrow product-market scope and could prove vulnerable in the long term. A balanced portfolio could be one which would enable BMW to generate sufficient funds to achieve its growth and the present objectives.à Lack of 'systems' appears to be another weakness of BMW. Today, whatever information (mainly financial) is generated appears to be an end in itself. LIMITATIONS: The product launch relies only on a target group and hence the area where the company is not concentrate or to the remote area will be out of focus as a result of boost in the strategy management can happen. There should be a market research well before the launch which can emphasise the region where the strategies are concentrated more and that could be conducted in various levels or areas. And also it would have been better for the study if it could be conducted in a wide level. Conclusion We can understand the systematic approach of the company will make a mark in the market from the very beginning itself. We know Product Diversification and Customer Care are strategic tools employed by present day business to efficiently integrate suppliers, manufacturers, warehouses, and customers so that merchandise is produced and distributed at the right quantities, to the right locations, and at the right time to cut down costs while satisfying service-level requirements .The company BMW can execute the strategies well, and they will become a top notch firm within a short span of time there in both locations.

Compliment Responses between Male and Female Essay
Compliment Responses between Male and Female - Essay Example This essay stresses that analysis of compliment response, which was in a contractive nature between the Kuiti speakers both the male and the female was used to identify the compliment response pattern between the three groups. The table below gives out a sample of the participation where S stands for situation, and then P stands for participation, R for rejection and lastly A for acceptance. Furthermore, the participants were assigned special numbers. Therefore, the numbers that accompanies this abbreviation represents their assigned codes. Also in the same way, the code might represent types of strategies at the level of micro representation and situations. This paper makes a conclusion that this research study demonstrated the compliment response strategies that both the male and Female Arabians usually use. It should be noted that the universal model portrayed in the study above concerning the compliment response is of positive outlook. This is because, different gender and origin portrays a different set of protocols. However, although not represented above, it should be noted that age is another important factor when it comes to response made to compliments. The finding in this research explains that the cross-linguistic compliment response patterns portray a different phenomenon at both the micro and macro levels. Notably, the three groups followed a certain preference order of rejection, evasion, and acceptance.

Performance Appraisal Systems Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Performance Appraisal Systems - Essay Example Managers apply the most suitable appraisal methods in order to assess and evaluate the performance of employees. Performance management is all about sharing expectations (Mike, 2010). Appraisal systems not only monitor the performance of employees but also play a crucial role in the selection of suitable employees for any specific task. Performance management is a whole working system that begins when a job is defined as needed and ends when an employee leaves the organization (Shahzad, 2010). Two of the most common objectives of appraisal systems include developing and improving the skills of the employees and increasing the productivity of the organization through selecting best employees for high-value tasks. Plessis (2010) asserts, ââ¬Å"The performance appraisal process is something that every business needs to do if they want to improve efficiencyâ⬠. Performance appraisal plays a vital role in the success of any company or organization because it supports the management in taking various critical decisions. Bacal (1999, p.34) asserts, ââ¬Å"The performance appraisal process involves manager and employee working together to assess the progress that the employee has made towards the goals set in performance planningâ⬠. Employee performance appraisal is done once or twice a year (Chandler, 2005). Effective performance appraisal systems improve employee loyalty, morale, and general productivity (Ndunuju, 2009). An appropriate performance appraisal not only m akes the employees aware of their deficiencies but also helps them improve the required skills and knowledge. The four major components included in the performance appraisal system are senior managementââ¬â¢s support, a design of the systemââ¬â¢s procedures, system implementation, and management training (Grote, 1996, p.189).

Motivation In The Case Of Technocraft Commerce Essay
Motivation In The Case Of Technocraft Commerce Essay Motivation is a reflection of the reasons why people do things. All behavior has a specific purpose (often several). Motivation can be considered to compromise an individuals effort, persistence and the direction of that effort. It is the degree to which an individual wants and chooses to engage in certain specified behavior. Notably in case study, Technocraft , there was an intrinsic motivation, employees were just motivated by salary, promotion, condition of work etc. It focuses primarily on motivation of the individual in the workplace. It explores the influence of organizational change, communication and conflict on personal motivation. Additionally, concepts such as intrinsic, extrinsic, rewards, personal needs and environmental stimulation are discussed. Thus, motivation had some affect in employees but they are negatively influenced in terms of different factors of an organization. Determination: Construction and culture of the formal organization: The construction or the structure of Technocraft contemplates management model with its functional relationships. The workers in this organization were closely prescribed or were in possession, or we can rather say negative command. This is a mechanistic organization and recurring in nature. According to Drennan 1992-93 culture is how things are done around here. It is what typical of the organization, the habits prevailing attitudes, the grown up pattern of accepted and expected behavior. Like wise, in Technocraft, it matches to role culture because it has gained a combination of size, departmentalization and ordering of activities. Generally, Mr. George, the chairman of the company can be taken as an example that was harsh and gives orders. The culture of the organization needs to be given, importance as the opportunities to learn. 4.2 Management and leadership style: Management is the process of getting things done effectively and efficiently through other people so as in their company. Mr. George Newell, the company chairman managed or organized his employees in a different way. It can be matched with MCGregors theory X because most of the employees did not enjoyed working for Technocraft and just motivated by money but the workers can be categorized or stereotyped in intrinsic motivation ready for challenging job, appreciation and recognition. 4.3 characters: 4.3.1 George Newell: He is the chairman of the company. He views his workers in a negative way and he doesnt recognize his employees. He is an exploitative- autocratic ruler. It matches with contingency style of leadership style rather than trait theory because he does not possess charismatic behavior, self-confidence etc. as we can see he brought Helen, management consultant to solve the problem. Employees were discouraged by his behavior because he promised to give reward for their heroic deeds and efforts but he felt proud by distributing the t- shirts to all the employees. He did not possess a degree of power, influence, responsibility and accountability which should be used in the pursuit of effective leadership performance. One of the Georges problems in the company was high labor turnover and his opinion was that the women had prompted this. As we know, motivation influences in individuals to succeed but he judges performances on the activities of the organization. Likewise, he reprimanded the employees who were late from the lunch, he could have warned them, may be he used this coercive power and this showed the low morale, seniority and distances. He also did the job rotation because he was not satisfied by the Maggies efforts, (the wiring department supervisor). 4.3.2 Helen Mckiernan: (management consultant) She was a management consultant and a very calm nature person. She was brought by the companys chairman to provide a solution of the problem. She mainly focused on the nature of the wiring job because the recruitment procedures were unduly lax. Helen kept in mind that the reason for the job satisfaction might be through informal situations and social side of the work. She analyzed the likes and dislikes of the workers and she found that the chairman was completely wrong about the labor turnover. 4.3.3 Elena and Veronica: (wirers) Both of them were wirers in Technocraft. They had a problem due to inexperience and fear of making a mistake and the problem caused directly from their slow work rate and they need some experienced wirers to correct them. In my opinion, they are in need of on-the job training. 4.3.4 Maggie Francis: (supervisor) Maggie Francis, the wiring department supervisor, who was given responsibility for bringing two women, i.e: Elen and Veronica, up to speed within a specific time. Maggies leadership style fits or matches with her supervising role. She was more understanding in nature. As a theme throughout this book of organization behavior, by Ian Brooks, organization change is particularly worthy of consideration in any discussion of leadership and it matches with consideration category of Blake and Mounton 1964, she was defensive and she was in a job rotation by the company chairman in place of Robert because she was too soft to the employees. 4.3.5. Robert Houlden ðŸ⢠Line Manager) On the basis of Blake and Mounton 1964, managerial grid, in this study there was a concern for production, autocratic and task oriented. He was appointed by chairman to sort out the shirkers in the hope of raising productivity in upcoming future. 4.4 Perception: George style of leadership was like autocratic towards the women. It is some what like coercive power. Although the staff possesses no confidence in their ability, they are in need of a positive motivation. New comers i.e.: Elen and Veronica were in a learning phase. There was no respect for Maggies job as well as womens in the work place. The women were reprimanded by the chairman who could be done in a polite way as well. 4.5 Motivation and shopfloor: The management of conflict in organizations affects the motivation of individuals and groups. According to Schmidt (1974), following empirical research conducted among management executions in USA, revealed both positive and negative effects of conflict. Maggies as a supervisor, the autocratic style of had adverse affect due to the sudden change in leadership.i.e.from wiring department supervisor to packing. Research indicates that conflict can stimulate creative thinking and can inspire people to confront long term problem and explore new approaches. It may also encourage reflection and help people clarify their views and heighten their interest in the task at hand and also test peoples abilities. However, negative effects of conflict can lead to dissatisfaction, demotivation and reduced performance. Schmidt (1974) found that certain people felt defeated by conflict and the consequences would be contactless and leads to suspicion. 5.0 Recommendation: What I can recommend is that the culture of the organization needs to be improved. Combining the two incident, there is a change in the level of output. The women were believed that they are matched with VH Vroom expectancy theory. In the 1st incident, there was a change in job design to fasten up the speed of the employees. He could have said in a polite way to the workers after they returned from their lunch break. This can be a good style of autocratic leader, and some how matches with McGregors X theory and coercive power as well. Finally, in my point of view, the management should be more systematic so that the workers would perform their activities more efficiently and effectively. 5.1 Reconstructing the work force: Reconstructing the shop floor is done for encouraging competition between workers. A group leader role could motivate the work force but Helen, management consultant investigated number of workers about the likes and dislikes of the company and the answers was negative management. So , the managerial practice at technocraft convinced her that the shop floor labor turnover was not only incorrect but actually a part of the problem. However, for better number of employees in the work place, the team should be encouraged and motivated. 5.2 Leadership Style: As in the technocraft everyones complain is towards management. George needs to enhance the considerations of the worker and to think of his employees. I think he lacks the ability to influence a group towards achieving certain objectives. Leadership and responsibility of mangagement should be open and consultative style. It should be implemented on the workers so that they would be motivated by the help of different programme. According to continuum tunnerbaum and Schmidt leadership style there should not tell and sells but there consults and joins in a democratic way. In the company, it matches with autocratic style which sub-ordinates could not use their respective freedom. 5.3 motivating the work force: George should bear in mind or adopt a consultative style which motivates its members, aiming the specific goals. The first two level of needs, salary and job security should be fulfilled by the management inorder to motivate the workforce. It would be the informal group which already exists. It also depends upon Georges perception for the feedback and support. In his opinion, unemployment are well below national average and many women are living with husbands who earned a decent living wage or salary. According to Maslow hierarchical needs, the lower level needs should take precedent, if they were not fulfilled. However, a link between job satisfaction and absenteeism, staff turnover, and the incidence both physical and mental health problems (Schneider, 1984). Furthermore, the model is highly ethnocentric. Finally, applying their theory to the workplace is fraught with difficulties although this theory is intended to be managerial or organizational tool. 5.4 Job Design: According to Herzberg, two factor theory, one of situation matches with the one theory among two:i.e; hygiene and motivators, which is hygiene factors. These methods should help in to participate in decision making. Herzbergs vertical theory has two sides: Dissatisfaction and 2. Extreme satisfaction with the environment, job and the work place. Like wise, the workers at Technocraft also faced the extreme dissatisfaction towards their job and relationship with supervisor was worse. Organization failed to provide adequate hygiene factors which as results, high level of conflict, absenteeism, labor turnover and low general morale was emerged. 5.5 Rewards: There is a difference in the distribution of rewards and the people differ due to the perception. The first is to discover the activities of the shopfloor staff. If there are specific objectives then Management must give response or feedback for the work done. During the productivity drive, George established a program called employee- morale boosting and the program succeeded. Thus, he promised to the employees that they would be rewarded for their efforts but the employees were distressed because there was no bonus payment except few t-shirts with the company logo. As a result, many of the employees resigned and this was the problem aroused in Technocraft which is labor turnover.it also can be compared with goal setting theory of locke. He firstly concentrated on objectives and he doesnt give the rewards. By the behavior of George what we can draw the outline is that he was in lack of morale, unsuitable in the post and the harsh leader. 6.0 Conclusion: In every change effort and programme someone loses or gains. Attention should be pursued for all gainers and losers as well. All change processes and program requires whole -hearted organization, commitment, support with adequate level of resource and time. They key issue for organization to adopt attitudes of flexibility, dynamism, responsiveness and positiveness and the drive is to maximize output and change in resource. So, I have compared this company Technocraft in many different theories. Likewise, in Technocraft, power is ultimately in the hand of single person. Chairman appreciates and consults with the problem of the company. A well planned theme that has been drawn up is loyalty and dedication by the employees and the autocracy by the top level of management. Above all, the role of managers and supervisors must change from the operation of systems and procedures to the development of expertise skills, knowledge and qualities in their people.

The Greater Good of Society Verses Individualism
His ideas off the war state and nature state. He greatly believed in democracy and equality among man. He believed in the three states of Democracy which are: a state of equality, state of liberty, and a state of nature. Locke believed that ââ¬Å"one man comes by a power of anotherâ⬠and in doing so creates a perfect society. Locke's view of society differs from the philosopher Thomas Hobb, but agree with Mill. He believes that a man in his natural state is constricted by laws, but could eventually do whatever he pleases. The state of nature is to ensure safety so the nature of war is ot reached, so no man will step out of his state and threaten another man's state. Also if the natural rights of freedom are broken a state of war is reached. Locke views an individual to be more important than society. Individuals steer the way of which society is going, and where they will go. Because an individuals' creates history, while humanity follows. For example Martine Luther King had one dream, this one man's view and opinion caused an outcry to America for change; and change did come. If individuals state of nature or freedom there will be a state of war among man.In conclusion all three philosophers all had similar ideas. They all believed that an individual is greater than society. But is that necessarily correct. One man is more important than humanity, and humanity is beneath an individual. Mills concept of happiness virtually ruining the good of mankind. While Locke viewed man's safety of their natural state an essential rule of mankind, which prevents the nature of war. The last philosopher Hobbs had an idea that in order for mankind to function, the individual most do two thing. One could together to form a common bound, and two, be completely happy. But who is more important, you or mankind?

The Prevalence Of Tommy John Surgery - 830 Words
The prevalence of Tommy John surgery, reconstruction of the Ulnar Collateral Ligament in the elbow, in Major League Baseball pitchers has been growing significantly over the past fifteen years. This injury results from overuse of the elbow joints as a result of thousands of pitches over many years. According to Liu et al, ââ¬Å"an overall increase occurred in the number of UCL reconstructions performed on MLB pitchers from 1999 to 2014.â⬠No more than fourteen MLB pitchers underwent surgery in any one year between 1999 and 2005, but seven of the next nine years has seen the number surpass this mark, culminating in highs of 35 surgeries in 2012 and 30 in 2014. They also found a revision rate of 13.2% over the same time period, meaning that roughly one in eight pitchers who undergo Tommy John surgery once will likely require it at least one more time in their career. Furthermore, the total number of revisions from 2012 to 2014 (21) exceeds the total number of revisions from 2003 to 2011 (20) with no signs of this trend slowing down. This is significant because while receiving Tommy John Surgery once is not necessarily career-threatening like it once was, receiving it more than once is far more likely to be so. According to doctors at Henry Ford Hospital, among pitchers who received the surgery more than once, only 65% returned to the MLB in any capacity and none of those pitchers were pitching more than three years after coming back (Verducci, Sports Illustrated).
